We are friends, neighbors, and obsessed with all things style. Gina designs unique, hand-crafted jewelry and Jennifer practices the art of wardrobe management. It was only natural that they came together to launch a blog and style shop. Cakewalk Style Shop.
I don’t like clutter. I don’t like samples. I don’t like multiple versions of the same thing. I want to find the best of what I’m looking for and stick with it. I’m stuck with this; I love it. It is the best mascara base I’ve found. The best part? I don’t need much mascara to go on top, which means I can just wash off my mascara with face wash. You see, eye make-up remover causes my mascara to run the next day, giving me raccoon eyes. I don’t want raccoon eyes. I would like to remain as bright-eyed (and bushy-tailed) as possible. I work too hard to disguise the fact that I don’t get enough sleep…

Friday was a special day for my 5 yr old and I because he had the day off from school. I made special arrangements in which my constant errand running and chauffeuring of children would cease for a brief, shining moment. This was a rare occasion indeed and I was really excited.
We decided to go to the Museum of Natural Science otherwise known as “the dinosaur” museum. As we slipped thru the throngs of school kids on fieldtrips, I tried to pause at significant exhibits and impart some interesting information to my child. The 4th kid barely gets any personal tutoring of facts. He’s lucky we remembered to teach him his name. This was my chance to make up for lost time. We talked about the difference between carnivore and herbivore. I showed him Foucault’s pendulum and tried to explain the earth’s rotation. We wandered into the energy hall and I tried to teach him about fossil fuel and how we are shamelessly dependent on foreign oil… Ok. I lost him. We needed something with a little more pizzazz.
Off to my absolute favorite, the Gem and Mineral hall. The displays of natural gems and minerals in the dimly lit hall are beautiful! The vivid colors and beauty of naturally formed rocks and crystals require no explanation. The hall, as a bonus to 5 yr olds, is a long narrow stretch, suitable for running. He squealed with excitement when he thought he saw some “Kryptonite”. I didn’t tell him it wasn’t real…
We enter the Smith Gem vault that houses beautiful examples of finished jewelry. Glorious sapphires and diamonds set in opulent necklaces. Hundreds of carats of white diamonds sparkle in tiaras. All the pieces appear as if they are floating behind the glass. Inside the vault, it’s pitch black except for the bright lights on each exhibit. Cole Porter standards play in the background and I feel transported. It’s a little bit magical. What a wonderful place to spend a few minutes of your day. I had forgotten about this little gem in Houston….

Described by style.com as “intellectual and reserved” these gorgeous clothes are what my fashion dreams are made of. Airy shapes are draped with amazing artistry. Chic and simple. Quick shots of beautiful color are perfect against neutral backgrounds paired with nude shoes. Alber Elbaz definitely knows the way to a girl’s heart! On my elusive Spring wish list? At least, the inspiration is there…
My list is in the works…

Ahhhhh.... after my Fall + Winter of Black + Greys, these colors are making me think. And wish. And plan.
However, I, like so many others, am resolved to temper myself. This would not, could not happen immediately. It will take time and careful planning. And, of course, major use of those promo codes I speak of. Like I’ve mentioned before, I try to stick to my lists. I am inspired to add more color to my Spring wish list.
Speaking of my Spring wish list, I’m keeping up with it on the sidebar. Lists + promo codes = easier dressing + stretched budget.

I can’t explain why, but as of late the thought of Santiago, Chile keeps popping into my head. I think it might be this beautiful, tree-lined street in Providencia that I’m pining for. I’m obsessed with beautiful tree-lined streets; I can not get enough of them. Providencia was my favorite area in the city. If I go back to Santiago, I will probably stay here. I was privy to a tour and fell head over heels for this little B&B. Darling little neighborhood.
I would walk, and walk, and walk. I would stroll the parks. I would pop in and out of cafes. I would eat here, again.
And, I would certainly re-experience the Santiago Culinary Tour. Liz took us to several markets to buy our fresh produce, fish, and flowers. She selected the perfect wine for our lunch. She has the most amazing flat overlooking the Parque Forestal. She cooked; I dreamed. I did, however, pitch in a little, as did my husband. Lunch was incredible.
I think I’m meant to go back?
